Same Day Surgery is a 33 bedded surgical unit catering for day surgery patients from many specialties. Orthopedics, gynecology, general surgery, ENT, urology, vascular, endoscopy, pain clinics, plastics, dental, eye surgery and dermatology are some of the specialties catered for within our department. Also, patients who receive treatment for hemochromatosis, and patients undergoing Intervention Radiology Procedures are cared for on our unit.

It is our aim to provide the optimum standard of patient care from admission to discharge for patients in a professional and safe manner.
About the Unit
Patients are admitted to Unit from 6.30am on Monday to Friday, and with occasional Saturday lists Length of stay depends on the procedure.
On arrival to Daycare, patients are met by administration staff and details are registered –eg name, address, next-on kin, telephone numbers and Insurance details. Following this, patients are met by a member of Nursing team and relevant medical history and observations are taken and recorded. Bloods and ECG may need to be taken. Patients are prepared for theatre and are escorted to the relevant theatre.
After the procedure, a period of time may be spent in Recovery room prior to returning to Daycare and then discharged when Nursing staff and Consultant are satisfied with the patient’s progress. Tea and toast are always well enjoyed prior to departure!

How long will I be in the Day Care Unit?
This depends on the procedure, but the nurse will inform you and your relative on admission.
Can I drive home following my procedure?
Following sedation or General Anaesthetic, it is advisable not to drive for 48 hours.
Will I see my Consultant before discharge?
All patients are seen by Consultant prior to discharge.
