Welcome to the Galway Clinic Oncology Day Ward
The opening hours of the Oncology Day ward are as follows:
Monday – Thursday 8.30 – 6.00pm.
Friday 8.30 – 4.30pm
Checklist for items to bring on your first day of treatment:
- Photographic I.D. – current passport or drivers licence
- List of all medications that you are taking
- Name, address, phone and fax numbers of your G.P
- Name, address, phone and fax numbers of your Pharmacy
- Your health insurance card
If at any stage you wish to see you Consultant during your treatment ask a member of staff and an appointment will be made for you.
If you have any dental problems please let the staff know as these should be dealt with before you start chemotherapy.
It is advisable to apply for a medical card - via your G.P. & Social Welfare Officer. Not everyone will be eligible but is definitely worth applying. Cancercare West can help with this.
If you have not already done so it is a good idea to sign up for the Drug Payment Scheme at your Pharmacy.
The following information will help provide an understanding for patients and their families about chemotherapy. It will address how chemotherapy works, how it is given and the most common side-effects.
Most importantly, it gives advice on how you should care for yourself during and after your treatment.
Your consultant has recommended this treatment as being the best option.
However, depending on your diagnosis, different treatments such as radiotherapy or surgery may be considered an option. If you would like more information about this please speak to your consultant or one of the nurses caring for you.
There is also the option of not receiving any treatment at all. The consequences of not receiving any treatment may be that the cancer cells will continue to grow and you may become more poorly.
