Sleep Studies

Diagnostic test used to determine whether you have a sleep disorder. The study will record several aspects of your sleep, including your breathing, respiratory effort and oxygen level. The following morning this information will be analyzed and once the results are available the consultant will discuss it with you.

Test Preparation

Please stick to your normal routines on the day of the test. Continue as usual with your medication.

Here are some of the things you should avoid:

  • Caffeine after 4:00 pm
  • Napping during the day of the test
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Do not watch TV in bed till late, you are at the Clinic to sleep
  • Try to avoid napping because if you do not nap, you are more likely to be tired enough at bedtime to fall asleep.

What should I bring with me?

  • Comfortable sleep wear
  • Toiletries
  • All current medications
  • Any records or diaries you have been asked to keep
  • A favorite pillow (the clinic provides standard pillows)
  • Something to read or any other quiet activity
  • CPAP or other equipment you use

Test procedure:

You will be admitted at the Galway Clinic after lunch time and you will be staying overnight. Your sleep needs to be recorded all night so that we can get an accurate picture of your sleep pattern and quality. Near bed time, one of our nurses will attach all the necessary equipment: you will have wires attached to your chest to record your electrocardiogram, 2 effort bands around the chest and belly, 2 wires on the legs to see your leg movement, a probe on your index finger to see your oxygen level and finally a nasal probe to see your breathing.

The machine is portable and will allow you to go to the toilet by yourself.

In the following morning, all the equipment will be removed. The information will be analyzed and once the results are available the consultant will discuss it with you. Your breakfast will be served.
