Mr. Chen graduated with Honours in Surgery & Ophthalmology from University College Galway (NUIG) in 1992. He began his ophthalmic training in Waterford, Ireland in 1994 and progressed to The Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital, Dublin. He then undertook Higher Surgical Training in Ophthalmology within the dediciated and highly structured programme in Liverpool. Here he worked with internationallyacclaimed ophthalmologists in Medical Retina (Prof. Simon Harding), Surgical Retina (Prof. David Wong), Glaucoma (Mark Batterbury, Peter Wishart), Paediatrics & Strabismus (Arvind Chandna, Ian Marsh). He then devoted the next four years to research (PhD, University of Liverpool) and a clinical fellowship in Paediatrics and Strabismus and Mr Arvind Chandna at Alder Hey Hospital. After his PhD work he undertook an extensive Fellowship in Oculoplastic Surgery and thereafter re-located to The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, San Francisco, USA. Here he undertook a Paediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship (Dr. William Good, MD) and further post-doctoral research (Dr. Anthony Norcia, PhD). He returned to a consultant ophthalmic post in Liverpool UK where he practised Oculoplastic and Paediatric Ophthalmic surgery from 2005-2008 before commencing his current post.
