Preparing Your Child for Hospital

Any visit for a child to a hospital environment can be both stress full and frightening especially if they are the patient.

Here are some frequently asked questions regarding children attending the Galway Clinic:

Can my child be treated in the Galway Clinic Emergency Room?

Children under the age of 5 years of age cannot be seen in the Emergency Room.

Children aged between 5-16 years of age can be treated for minor injuries only.

I would like my child to have a consultation with a Galway Clinic Consultant

If you would like your child to have a consultation with a consultant here in the Galway Clinic you will firstly need a referral letter from your GP.

Many of the Galway Clinic Consultants across a wide variety of specialities treat children and carry our minor surgical procedures here in the Galway Clinic.

The procedures and age of the child are dependent on each consultant.

Here are a few useful tip to help prepare your child for their hospital visit

  • Talk about you hospital visit in advance of your appointment
  • Explain to your child what will happen when you arrive
  • If your child has a favourite toy or teddy bear please bring it along
  • Please bring loose fitting comfortable clothing for your child

  • How long will the procedure take?
  • Does my child need to fast?
  • Will an overnight stay be required?
