Preparing Your Child for Hospital



Here are some frequently asked questions regarding children attending Galway Clinic:

Can my child be treated in Galway Clinic Emergency Department?


Children under the age of 5 years of age cannot be seen in our Emergency Department.

Children aged between 5-16 years of age can be treated for minor injuries only.

Can children have a consultation with a Galway Clinic Consultant?


It would depend on the speciality but you will firstly need a referral letter from your child's GP.

Many of the Galway Clinic Consultants across a wide variety of specialities treat children and carry our minor surgical procedures here in Galway Clinic.

The procedures and age of the child are dependent on each consultant.

Here are a few useful tips to help prepare your child for their hospital visit:


  • Talk about your hospital visit in advance of your appointment
  • Explain to your child what will happen when you arrive
  • If your child has a favourite toy or teddy bear please bring it along
  • Please bring loose fitting comfortable clothing for your child

Parent Preparations Questions I should ask my Consultant


  • How long will the procedure take?
  • Does my child need to fast?
  • Will an overnight stay be required?
